When word got out that Phoenix’s long-awaited fifth LP would be mixed on the same console used to record Michael Jackson’s Thriller, it became clear the French foursome intended to go big on this one. Lead single “Entertainment,” released last month, confirmed with its opening bars that the album would reach for an epic sound worthy of the hallowed artifact. While the verse glides along on the band’s signature muted guitar riffing and Thomas Mars’ distinctive vocals, exotic harmonies and pounding drum crescendos give the track an electrifying, cinematic feel.
The official video for “Entertainment,” directed by Patrick Daughters (Depeche Mode, Grizzly Bear, Feist), takes its cues from the larger-than-life energy of the song. The clip is a tantalizingly confusing mini-epic, colliding Korean soap opera tropes with real-world references to produce a thought-provoking audiovisual mélange. Vignettes from the lives of a rising K-pop star and a pair of time traveling lovers are juxtaposed with military imagery and mass gymnastic footage in this violent and mysterious tale of longing, disenchantment and redemption. Watch it above.
Bankrupt! is set for an April 23rd release via Glassnote.
