Solange Knowles, Florence and the Machine, Sky Ferreira. What do these ladies have in common? Dev Hynes has worked on smash hits for all three of them. Both through his solo projects (formerly Lightspeed Champion, currently Blood Orange) and as a writer and producer for other artists, this noir pop savant has been bringing creative, downright gorgeous music to the masses. If you haven’t checked out Blood Orange’s 2011 debut full-length Coastal Grooves or his “Dinner” single, both are well worth a listen.
Hynes – born in Texas, raised in the UK and currently residing in New York – has a knack for blending lush, immersive electronics with funky rhythms and interesting chord progressions to produce a sound that’s at once warm and haunting. His influences range from doo-wop to Japanese pop to Prince and the Junior Boys. New York singer and actress Sky Ferreira’s new Ghost EP features a track co-written by Hynes and Ariel Rechtshaid, “Everything Is Embarrassing,” which hews closely to the Blood Orange aesthetic. Watch the video above, or stream the track below. Ghost is out now on Capitol Records.
