A.G. Cook has never been the face of his own music, not really. His biggest hit came from behind the scenes working with SOPHIE to produce “Hey QT,” where he began to be heralded by some as a savior for contemporary pop, disregarded by others as radio nonsense, and even critiqued at points for hiding his identity behind feminine iconography.

If anything, “Superstar” makes it seem to be that Cook has taken these criticisms to heart. With his HD headshot decorating the glittery single cover art, he himself sings on the track without pitch-shift about wanting to be accepted, wanting to make it big, and about how his fans’ support has made him “feel like a superstar.” For the first minute it lags, taking on the guilty-conscious-meets-Radio-Disney effect of Skylar Spence’s departure from Saint Pepsi. But at the first moment Cook’s voice cracks and his signature hard-hitting synth lines rush in, it becomes recognizably hypnotic and energetic. “Superstar” may not be have the brilliant sugar-coated single appeal of something like “Beautiful,” but despite that it remains Cook‘s sweetest work to date.
