Anderson .Paak

It’s been a big year for Anderson .Paak, the latest alt-rap sensation to get a shot at crossover fame. With a left-field sensibility and a cigarette-stained rasp, .Paak has showcased his talents both as a rapper and a singer on records with The Game, Dr. Dre and GoldLink in 2015, and now he’s ready for the solo limelight.

“The Season/Carry Me” is a sprawling record that challenges .Paak to impress us with his versatility and keep listeners engaged for five-and-a-half minutes. The Oxnard, CA trailblazer more than rises to the occasion, dropping quotables over a delicate, soulful instrumental from 9th Wonder and Callum Conner.

“And fuck fame, that killed all my favorite entertainers,” he spits on the opening verse.

From there the track shifts into a confessional as .Paak paints a grim picture of reality for the disadvantaged and touches on his own tumultuous upbringing and struggles providing for his wife and son.

.Paak is still a new artist in many regards, but “The Season/Carry Me” is as impressive and mature of a release as you’ll likely hear this year. Listen below.
