A couple years ago, Beck was key part of a Doug Aitken work at the Hirschhorn Museum that involved projecting images on the outer walls of the circular building while the song “I Only Have Eyes For You” was covered in a multitude of styles. Beck’s soulful take garnered special attention, most likely because of his devotion to the original work. Similarly his take of “Cant Help Falling in Love” is anchored by a certain degree of devotion, both in the literal delivery and the style in which he pays homage.
The cover is part of the album Resistance Radio: The Man in the High Castle, which features a variety of artists and is the musical companion to the Amazon original series, “The Man in the High Castle”. Funnily enough even that song ends up on the album but this time it’s Kevin Morby’s turn. The premise of the show is a dystopian future in which the allies lost World War II thus this album, produced by Sam Cohen and Brian Burton (aka Danger Mouse), is full of kilter nostalgia, tracks that sound right out of an odd fairy tale especially if you can recall what the original version sounds like. In order to achieve this the producers created a sort of time machine in the studio and coaxed out some dark reimaginings of songs from the early 60s, 1962 to be exact.
