Billie Eilish‘s upcoming studio album When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? is set to drop on March 29th. Our latest preview of the release is “wish you were gay.”
Billie says of the track, “At least if they were gay, I’d have a valid reason for their rejection and lack of interest in being with me. I wrote the song when I was 14 and madly in love with a boy. It’s supposed to be a fun and playful way at dealing with rejection.”
Speaking on the song’s title in particular, Eilish explained that the song is “not meant to be offensive in any way. It literally means I wish he was gay so that he didn’t like me for an actual reason, instead of the fact that he didn’t like me.” We see this in the lyrics, “To spare my pride / To give your lack of interest an explanation / I’m not your type / Maybe I’m not your preferred gender orientation.”
