In anticipation of his upcoming solo album, Tame Impala’s Cameron Avery has released the deceptively upbeat “Wasted On Fidelity,” borne from a wish to “make something that sounded like the old records I love.” While it’s much more Pond than Frank Sinatra, it does have a delightful, lilting strings section and a breezy melody. The lyrics however, are more mournful, lamenting his “Wasted wealth / On the bored things”; all his failed attempts to purchase his own happiness. The premise is by no means new—the loneliness of fame! The elusiveness of love! But Avery’s self-loathing is refreshingly self-effacing. Ripe Dreams, Pipe Dreams is out March 10 on Anti Records.
