No Better Blues
Chance the Rapper is a hater. He hates his bed, his couch, his breakfast, his car, losing, winning, artists, white people, concerts and crowds. He hates “texts that are over sexual / emotion because it’s perpetual / schedules, calendars, reminders ‘cause they just remind us that tomorrow gon’ be just as timeless.” He doesn’t see a bright future in much of anything around him. In a complete reversal of Manu Chao’s “Me Gustas Tu,” Chance expresses the philosophy of a devoted pessimist, disillusioned with everything around him, from the ultra-personal text to capitalism to hope itself.
Chance teamed up with his band The Social Experiment to create the melancholic back track to his gloomy spoken word. He manages to sound sincere while making it clear that he is speaking with his tongue firmly in cheek. The song’s brilliance lies in the flourishes of poetry Chance inserts amidst the rhythmic repetition of his list. Stream it below.
