Chance the Rapper has always been willing and able to get in touch with his sensitive side, but it can still be surprising when he releases a song like “I Am Very Very Lonely.” Maybe he’s not saying it with an entirely straight face as he wonders what’s on Apple TV and Comcast to distract him from a lost love, but the sentiment does seem at least partially genuine. Chance is between singing and rapping over an airy, gentle beat as he exhorts his former lover, “Hit my line / If you ain’t on shit / If you’re trying to smoke / Baby, hit my line.” The backing vocals, presumably provided by Social Experiment, get a little bit showy for the chorus, but for the most part this is just Chance over a spare beat, and it’s a surprisingly lovely tune. “Shoulda had you when I had you / Now I wish I got you, tonight” isn’t Shakespeare, but it’s delivered with such earnestness. It’s a marijuana love story, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Stream “I Am Very Very Lonely” below.
