A brilliant departure from Childish Gambino’s signature satyrical rhymes, “Sober” calls to mind the softer side of Donald Glover we caught a glimpse of on his second LP, Camp. Even the rough mix of this ballad delivers an empathetic story of lost love complemented by nostalgic staccato keys and a funky low-fi bassline reminiscent of ’90s R&B. It’s a stark contrast from the same guy who gave us lyrics as criminally clever as “E.E. Cumming on her face / now that’s poetry in motion,” but it demonstrates that there’s no limit on what to expect from this modern day man of virtu. Stream “Sober” below.
