This most recent release by veteran hip-hoppers De La Soul isn’t actually that “recent.” Ahead of their upcoming And the Anonymous Nobody album, the group presents “Sho Nuff,” an outtake from sessions making up their De La Soul is Dead LP. Since that album was released 25 years ago, the retro sounds here aren’t just an influence or a callback to the past; they’re all very much of it. All the usual ’91 trappings are present: a sampled drum loop, a jazzy horn sample and vocal phrases laid atop via scratching. The vocal interplay evokes even earlier styles (Run-DMC, Treacherous Three, et al) and imbues the track with an upbeat energy largely missing from De La Soul is Dead. It’s a look to the past that stands well on its own while also whetting appetites for the trio’s upcoming full-length release.
