Deer Tick – The Dream’s In The Ditch

Rhode Island folk standouts Deer Tick are back with a new single “The Dream’s In The Ditch.” It’s fair to say that the track’s title is less than cheerful. It is also fair to say that the lyrics aren’t as feel good as one would hope; “So you wait for the pain that will sing you to sleep again / Now you walk with your wounds like you got nothing to lose / Is this it / This is it.” That’s some pretty serious stuff right there.

Yet even with all that emotion and hardship, this song makes you feel good. Not in a weird masochistic way, but quite literally in a way that will have you bopping your head and tapping your foot. The sprinkling of piano and the light-heartedness of the glockenspiel make for an instantaneous upbeat feel. John McCauley’s vocals are crisp and refreshing and pair perfectly with the poppy tune. “The Dream’s In The Ditch” is the perfect combination of happy and sad, cheerful and somber, optimistic and hopeless. It’s the jumbo shrimp of songs. Stream it below.
