Don't Leave Me (Blink 182 Cover)
Devon Baldwin stunned us with her slow, gorgeous debut single “Refuse” in October. She’s back again today with two new releases, one of which is a cover of Blink 182‘s “Don’t Leave Me,” off 1999’s Enema of the State. A standard cover makes an attempt at mimicry, while a good cover succeeds in interpretation. This is the latter: Baldwin translates Blink’s dumped lover begging for another chance into a whole new universe. Her smooth, sweet vocals lace up perfectly with Christoph Andersson’s dreamily rippling production, creating a character who seems to have already moved through the anger and bargaining stages of grief (where Blink’s original solidly pleads), dipping briefly into sadness and moving toward acceptance all the while. She’s asking for one more time with feeling, but maybe she doesn’t even believe it anymore. Stream the track below.
