Florence + The Machine’s video for “Breaking Down” is the dreamy retro vacation film you wish your parents filmed back in the day, complete with Florence Welch sitting poolside sporting vintage sunnies. With a calendar-conscious debut, this surprisingly patriotic production unloads a heavy dose of nostalgic Americana — including star-spangled pinwheels and a waving American flag — on viewers just before Independence Day. The video was directed by Tabitha Denholm, who has once again proven her keen sense for simultaneously capturing Welch’s modesty and allure, as she did on the artist’s videos for “Cosmic Love” and “Never Let Me Go.”
You can catch Florence + The Machine live this fall at Merriweather Post Pavilion on September 19th. In the meantime, check out her Paul Epworth-produced sophomore album, Ceremonials, out now via Island.
