Eat it, D’Angelo. In his video for “Somebody That I Used To Know,” Wally de Backer, a.k.a. Gotye, strips down to his birthday suit before dealing out a healthy serving of soul. You may remember Gotye from his 2006 single, “Learnalilgivinandlovin,” and more recently the considerably darker “Eyes Wide Open.” “Somebody That I Used To Know,” the second single off the forthcoming full-length, Making Mirrors, at first finds the multi-instrumentalist treading on more minimalist ground as he whispers over delicate plucked strings and xylophones. It takes a bit to kick in, but once de Backer starts belting out the chorus the song takes on a whole other level of emotion. Fellow Aussie, Kimbra, fits perfectly into this track, following the same soft-loud vocal dynamic. Listen and tell me you don’t get the chills when she lets it go at the end of her verse. If there’s any time to get into Gotye, it’s now. Making Mirrors comes out August 19th.
