Genre: R&B   Sounds Like: Jessie Ware

Mix two tablespoons of Jessie Ware’s swagger, a heavy helping of Empress Of’s unique melodies and a dash of Frank Ocean’s introspection, and your final result would be A K U A, the Montreal R&B singer who today released her extraordinary debut EP, One’s Company. What started as a solo bedroom music project, followed by a “brief (but weird) stint singing at a luxury Middle Eastern hotel-bar,” has morphed into one hell of a freshman release. While One’s Company may be her first foray into the music scene, the EP sounds like it came from a much more seasoned artist, striking the perfect balance between edgy and nostalgic. Highlights include the lead single “Gravity” and the eponymous “One’s Company,” though it’d be a mistake to skip through the rest of the five-track release.
