Usually, when somebody drops a Smiths comparison, it’s to set a point of reference for new artists channeling that distinct ’80s style. When we first heard White Lodge‘s “Prom King,” the Smiths came to mind, but not in the usual post-punk pop-rock sense. The Boston duo captures that jangly Morrisey emotionalism while also drawing from the contemporary fuzzed-out warmth of chillwave artists like Washed Out. The final result is some upbeat dream pop that we find ourselves really into. Stream it below.
“Prom King” will appear on White Lodge’s upcoming How To Stay Jealous Forever EP, out October 1st.
