Jerk‘s “Socotra” wasn’t supposed to be a song. “[The track] was made more as a creative exercise than a song for a project,” says Austin Smith, frontman of the Houston trio. That’s not hard to imagine considering the tune’s experimental nature. “Socotra” is an eerily-infectious collection of dark synth soundscapes and modulated voices, the latter of which are built around a refrain that is actually a pitched-down version of a voicemail from Smith’s mother. As experimental as “Socotra” might be however, the end product is a full-fledged song that will appear to fans of adventurous acts like alt-J and Everything Everything. Listen below.
