Glasgow’s Joe Howe has a lot going on. Dig into his website and you’ll find A/V collaborations, his thesis presentation involving mo-cap conducting and a host of other projects under “an increasingly weird selection of names.” Under his own name and solely through the speakers, he’s here with “Zoned Reminder,” a continuation of the warped club sounds he threw around like glossy paint on last year’s EXEP. It’s a body-moving, head-spinning tour of some funky territory, with an outrageously chunky monophonic synth on some Roger shit and some ground-pounding, tech-heavy drums that take over halfway through to glorious effect.
Mr. Howe’s palette is far from exhausted by the splatter on display here, given the evidence of his deep portfolio, but “Zoned Reminder” is just that — a treated missive crafted with the toolkit of a true talent. Modern denizens of the funkisphere, from fellow Glaswegians Rustie and HudMo to Numbers’ talkbox king Redinho to reality tester Lone, are on notice for the track’s release with Sound Pellegrino’s SND.PE Vol. 04 comp on January 19th.
