London trio Kero Kero Bonito make some of the most quirky and endearing pop out there these days, drawing inspiration from video game music and ‘90s pop hits. On their 2014 debut album, Intro Bonito, they introduced their unique British hip-hop/J-pop fusion to the world. But while that album sometimes bordered on gimmicky, the group’s latest singles have signaled their growth into full-fledged pop artists.
Their beats are better, and Sarah Midori Perry leaps from charming English to Japanese raps so smoothly that sometimes it takes a few seconds to even notice the change. Luckily, they haven’t lost their relentlessly youthful energy, still present in the video game samples and clever lyrics of “Graduation,” the latest single from their upcoming second album, Bonito Generation.
