Laura Doggett‘s debut track, “Phoenix,” portends big things for the UK songstress. With a rippling beat, synths and simple piano riff, the instrumentation on this SOHN–produced number is sparse but powerful. The backing vocals sound like a gospel chorus, but this is dark elegy, not Sunday testimonial. At the center of it all is Doggett’s voice, sultry and arresting, coming up from the lower register. Comparisons to James Blake are inevitable, since both artists are young, British and minimalist. Sharing atmospheric sensibilities with Blake is something to be proud of, particularly when the evidence would suggest that Doggett is quite a talent in her own right. Check it out below.
