Check Up (Prod. D33J)
2016 has been the year of Lil Yachty: from his starring role in Yeezy Season 3 to his cunningly fresh mixtape Lil Boat, to his place on the flawed but interesting XXL Freshman Class cover, to his seemingly endless list of features, collaborations, and appearances. He’s already been around seemingly every big rapper out right now and it just won’t stop. His collaboration with the West Coast’s chill, future-trap oddball D33J, however, still comes as a bit of a surprise. Yet it ends up being a good, even great one. “Check Up” is one of the red-haired entrepreneur’s most vibing and wavy songs this year. He gets really in his Drake feelings as he sings autotune over beachy synths about calling to check on his main squeeze. It’s a sweet and honest song, two things that have made Yachty one of the most endearing young figures in rap. One day yachty might slip and release a track where his style just doesn’t fit right, but that day isn’t today. Today is all about Yachty, boats, feelings, and vibes.
