“Out There” has been gestating for Lomelda’s Hannah Read since high school. Spurred by discovering Elliot Smith with her brother, this song plays out like an ekphrastic poem, bearing the influence of its muse, while not descending into mimicry. It draws from a fantasy of her and her brother’s in which they were friends with the singer-songwriter. “Out There” shares the softness of Smith’s work. But where Smith’s compositions could be crowded and dense, Read’s track stretches out and feels roomier.
