Maxo, a Brooklyn producer whose deep Bandcamp trough spans “VGM / EDM / FUSION / MISC” over two accounts, dropped “Honeywell” (or more accurately “☆ – H o n e y b e l l – ☆” — dude is really #outchea in these kawaii streets) the other day, and if it’s not part of his “Level Music” series it’s because it’s truly next level. From the first synth wash up into a sound clip of someone — a professor, probably, or a scientist who skews mad — solemnly intoning “Impossible!,” the track is a juking, button-mashing, hyperspeed skid from Rainbow Road to Grape Garden. The rapid-fire percussion hits high notes of twisted hi-hats worthy of some middle ground of Noah “40” Shebib and Rustie, while the sugar-rush vocals dodge jazz-fusion chord changes and ride updrafts of true joy into a sky piled high with 16-bit clouds. “Honeybell” is tyrannically ecstatic, trigger-happy and tricked-out in equal measure, and Maxo will not be denied. Despite what the sample says, he’s definitely at full power.
