Mitski’s video for “Happy” is an emotional rollercoaster set in the 1950s. Directed by Maegan Houang, the story unfolds through small details: locks of hair, cookies, pearls, handbag linings. Typical of Mitski, the lyrics as well as the video are embedded with deep symbolism that becomes more apparent after every watch or listen. You’ll definitely catch yourself watching the dark ending multiple times. The film noir feel makes “Happy” seem like a full length feature, which we would not mind if it were the case.
“Happy” appears on Mitski’s upcoming album Puberty 2, out June 17th.
