It’s been a little over a year-and-a-half since the release of NxWorries’ “Suede,” the first collaborative single from singer-songwriter Anderson .Paak and prolific beat-maker Knxwledge. And yet, with their first full-length album only month away, it’s interesting to hear how their newest single, originally teased at the end of the “Suede” music video, mirrors their first.
“Lyk Dis” features some of Knxwledge’s typical production tendencies. A vintage vocal and subsequent horn blast introduce a spacious arrangement of soul samples and no-frills drum programming. What is new is the comparative reserve of Paak’s vocal, at least when compared to the duo’s previous material. It’s suggestive of the range — from throwback soul to hip-hop — that Paak has covered in his own solo work.
