Bankrupt! (Gesaffelstein Remix)
French producer Mike Lévy, more commonly known as Gesaffelstein, creates visceral, intense music. In some ways, it is inherently incompatible with carefree summer vibes, which is fitting as August rolls to a close. There is plenty of evidence of this on his new remix of Phoenix’s “Bankrupt.” He transforms the original into something dark, dragging the song down into the caverns of an underground dance club. The bridge of the song becomes something like a haunted house nightmare on ecstasy. Pulsing, industrial synth rhythms and deep electronic bass reverberate, and just like that Thomas Mars’ voice, which is left more or less untouched, feels like some kind of alien intruder, a prisoner to the new atmosphere of the song. Of course, this all sounds a bit dreary, and distinctly hard to listen to, but that ignores the fact that dark spaces can also be lush with a sexual energy that is simply not found in the bright of day. Lévy taps into the excitement of fear, and before you know it a cold sweat has gotten quite a bit warmer.
