Expect a new sound from the “newly re-configured” Portico on “Living Fields,” the first track they’ve released as a trio. The song builds itself into a legible form then breaks its own rules. Its departure takes shape in a celestial array of diverging harmonies and static disorder. It’s hard to pin down the transitory track in an absolute way since it doesn’t necessarily offer closure or follow a familiar shape. Instead, it borrows from different trends and traditions, convincing us that the members of the group are guides on a journey elsewhere.

Portico has an album coming out in March that features collaborations with Jamie Woon and Joe Newman of alt-J. Until then, check out “Living Fields” below.
