Nick Wisdom and AstroLogical, two producers of swirled, cosmic (sometimes kosmische), boom-bap-inflected hip-hop hailing from Vancouver, have teamed up as Potatohead People to release “Explosives” and “Blue Charms.” The former is a thumping, confident head-bobber, featuring Detroit’s own Illa J in the cut as well as fellow Vancouverite Moka Only spitting game to women varying receptivity. The B-side is a whole different beast, showcasing the selectors’ range: “Blue Charms” slides along a smooth, smoked-out road of Rhodes with pinpoint bass figures to mark the way, fusing club-ready knocks in the rhythm section with juicy slabs of synth. It’s not hard to see Thundercat beaming approvingly down on the whole scene — it hits the same sweet spot as his most intricate and most purely hedonistic tracks. The fusion of SoCal sunset vibes with candy-paint roller-rink motion is one the Potatohead People seem to have on lock, so take your pick. Stream “Blue Charms” below, and download the single over at Bandcamp if you’re so inclined.
