I’ve written a ton of articles for ATG, but no single artist has been harder for me to pin down than Nyx.
With an unbelievably unique voice and a preference for fuzzed out guitars à la St. Vincent’s “Huey Newton,” Angelica Tavella has proven to be an interesting artist to follow. While I described her first single, “Parade,” as the lovechild of Annie Clark and Billy Corgan, her newest track “Jesus Lives” is more of a slow burner with a dark edge. From the safety of her Oakland home, Tavella describes San Francisco as “the place where Jesus lives and lovers lie,” all the while pleading not to go down without her. Like the song as a whole, the lyric “You would be my biggest muse / I would be your biggest fear” is absolutely killer and perfectly characterizes the arts community that fled across the Bay.
Nyx’s debut Showdown EP comes out August 28th. For all of you West Coast fans, here are Nyx’s upcoming tour dates.
