Grimes (aka 23 year old Claire Boucher) has been a very busy woman. In the last two years, she has released two full lengths, a split EP, a slew of remixes and is set to release her third full-length in January. Despite this wealth of output, Boucher considers the upcoming Visions her debut LP and the final realization of her sound. “Oblivion” is the first taste of the album, which is decidedly more poppy than anything of hers to date. Per usual, the sugary playfulness in her vocals is darkened by haunting echoes and creepy synths, covering the songs like cobwebs. The song is leaked appropriately just before Halloween and would go very nicely with some late night candy corn. Her first effort, Geidi Primes, was one of my favorite albums to wind down to in 2010, and it’s good to hear that she hasn’t ventured away from her loop machine and GarageBand. Also check out “Vanessa,” the standout track from her split EP with D’eon last May.
