If I may borrow from the words of Powerman 5000, recent years have seen the worlds of music and nerd-dom collide. We’ve witnessed the rise of “nerd-core” hip hop artists like MC Frontalot and MC Lars that draw from nerd subcultures for lyrical inspiration, as well as creative acts like Anamanaguchi that actually use 8-bit hardware and other nerdy fascinations to create intriguing, original music. Random (AKA Mega Ran) lies somewhere in between. Fans of Team Teamwork‘s Ocarina of Rhyme and Vinyl Fantasy 7 will undoubtedly appreciate the Philly rapper’s latest mixtape, Black Materia, an ode to the holy grail of RPG’s, Final Fantasy 7. Black Materia goes a bit further than Team Teamwork’s mixtapes. Not only does he sample some of the seventh installment’s most recognizable sounds and music, but he actually raps, and quite cleverly might I add, about the game’s story. The man is that devoted. Check out “Avalanche” and “Mako Reactor” below, and if you like what you hear download this FREE 8-track sampler. The whole 16-track masterpiece can be bought HERE.
