Post-metal virtuousos Russian Circles return with “Vorel,” a track from their upcoming album Guidance. At almost five and a half minutes, the song takes the listener on a journey through changing sections, rhythms and melodies and plenty of breakdowns. It begins with ambient guitars and ominous percussion. As things build, the listener is soon pummeled by a wall of sound, comprised of brutal drums and tremolo riffs — hello Norwegian black metal. Think Darkthrone’s Soulside Journey or At the Gates’s legendary Slaughter of the Soul. Listen below and, by the journey’s end, you’ll also be thinking that August can’t come soon enough.
