UK dream pop has always been in a league of its own, and today’s Sonny Elliot continues that charge into our ears in retro ballad form. The duo in question are brothers from Southhampton whose intersecting taste evokes memories of both Primal Scream and The Housemartins, among others. After members of famed UK outfit Wild Smiles, they are taking a different approach as they regroup and rebuild after a tragedy-laden breakup.
Under Covers opens with the title track, which was met with heavy praise by our fellow critics at The 405 and Line of Best Fit. This smooth introduction dances a very subtle line between shoegaze and dream pop, which leads the listener down a road of pleasant familiarity without too much fluff. But don’t get spoiled by this. Their dynamism comes through quickly as “Without You” flows seamlessly, laying heavily on sensual brass, into “One Day With You”. Just wait – “Hold On” – as the final track suggests. You will be carried away before you know it.
Under Covers is out May 25th via self-release. Do not miss this one.
