Submotion Orchestra, a 7-piece project from Leeds, released their 1968 EP about a month ago on Flux Pavilion’s Circus Records. Despite being signed up the dubstep giant’s label, Submotion Orchestra offer up a cool blend of jazz, dance, pop, and light electronic flourishes, casting them as outliers among their more sonically aggressive labelmates. The 1968 EP’s five tracks are rife with undulating pockets of sub-bass and snappy dance tunes. But for my money, the strongest cut is the ballad “Hard To Stay.” Vocalist Ruby Woods’ fits comfortably in the R&B stylings of the song, cooing hear heartache until eventually she’s joined with a horn section at the song’s crescendo, rounding out a gorgeous lamentation of lost love.
