Over their almost thirty year career, Superchunk have never really been labeled political firebrands, but on the punk quartet’s newest single, “What a Time to Be Alive,” the band explicitly attacks our current political climate. With a beat and tempo that are reminiscent of their classic “Slack Motherf****er,” the band lambasts “the scum, the shame, the f***ing lies” of our leaders, as well as those that have enabled them. They call out those “clinging to the myth you were cheated, the myth you were robbed.” While it explicitly addresses politics more than perhaps any other Superchunk song, “What a Time to Be Alive” still manages to capture the sound of a band 30 years into its career. Mac McCaughan has one of the most distinct voices in punk music, and on the band’s newest track, the angst that has simmered in each of his lines explodes into full-blown anger.
What a Time to Be Alive will be released by Merge on February 16, 2018.
