SXSW 2011: Trend Watch – Electrotribal

We saw lots of crazy bands at SXSW doing lots of crazy gimmicky stuff, but one trend in particular has stuck with me for the whole seven days since I’ve been back. I’m talking about the emergence of the frontman drummer. There were tom toms front and center on almost every stage. It started Wednesday night with Neon Gold‘s showcase featuring three drummer-as-frontman bands: Ellie Goulding, Clock Opera, and Walk the Moon. It continued Thursday with Reptar and Bear Hands at the Cantora Records showcase. I could go on, but suffice it to say by Friday Adrian, Will and I agreed over 1pm Bud heavies at the Fader Fort – an emerging trend was in our midst.

These bands are also drawn together not only by their drum stick wielding frontmen but also by their synthy undertones. The heavy percussion and the fuzzy electronic harmonies pair together to create a sound that I dare say is specific to NOW. I hereby dub it Electrotribal. Watch out – it’s coming soon to a stage near you.

And finally: How crazy is this Ellie Goulding drumming GIF (check it out after the jump)? Once you’re done being mesmerized by her rocking out–and feel free to take your time–listen to the tracks below because they are important.
