Welcome to #TBT. Every week we will be serving up an old school jam that has been remixed and revamped to perfection.
This Thursday we have a bona fide bulk of throwback jams from a DJ who frequently dabbles in throwback-itude. John McCarten – dba Manic Focus – is a Chicago-based DJ/Producer that hails from Minnesota. His music is primarily dubstep, consisting of deep dark beats and monstrous drops, but I wouldn’t pigeonhole him to that much-maligned genre. His music is reminiscent of older Pretty Lights stuff, very melodious while simultaneously bass heavy; he never sacrifices the melody for the bassline, which usually just devolves into a black hole of bass that gets old fast.
But by far the best part of Manic Focus is that he samples throwbacks all the time.
We’re only featuring two of his tributes here today, but I strongly encourage you to take a quick jaunt over to his Soundcloud for more. The first, “Calling Out,” is a remix of Primitive Radio Gods’ “Standing Outside A Broken Phonebooth With Money In My Hand” and exhibits Manic Focus’s more melodic side.
The second jam is a remix of Chumbawama’s “Tubthumping”. Now I’m no expert, and I’m not sure where the line between “remix” and “mashup” lies, but this song definitely straddles the shit out of it. While the song is predominantly Tubthumpingly based, Manic Focus also incorporates these certified throwbacks: Jay-Z’s “Dirt Off Your Shoulder”; Talib Kweli’s “Get By”; and Kris Kross’s “Jump”. But Chumbawamba takes the cake, as I remember that fateful night in 1997 when it was featured in all four slots of 99.1 WHFS’ nightly “Four Most Wanted” countdown. That was back when WHFS still played Rock, and wasn’t a Latin music channel. Heck, it was back when people still listened to the radio at home. Damn. #ThrowBackCity
