We can all agree that “What is Love” was brought into the spotlight by Will Ferrel and Chris Kattan’s “Roxbuy Guys” skits on Saturday Night Live. It became an epidemic, really. Every time Haddaway’s Eurodance track came through the speakers, circles of dancing boys and girls everywhere, nay entire dance halls, would cock their heads and start bopping aggressively to the beat. I might even go as far as saying “What is Love” is the original meme.

Now, over two decades later since its original release, “What is Love” has been given a 21st century makeover by Dutch newcomers Tears & Marble. This cover sounds more like a love confessional and less of an eager attempt at sealing a one night stand thanks to the stripped away dance beats, recurrent deep chords, melodic drones and of course a mysteriously sensual female vocal. It’s nothing like it’s predecessor, and if they didn’t have the same lyrics I’d be hard pressed to say they’re the same song. Even so, both tell a story — one carefree and go-get-em, the other morose and vulnerable. Butabi brothers everywhere be warned. Stream below.
