The Pains of Being Pure at Heart has found the key to personifying 90s teen angst. Despite only being around since 2007, the band’s signature trebly, melancholy pop could pretty effortlessly fit in on an episode of Dawson’s Creek. While it is their moody, carelessly thoughtful, unaffected sound that sets TPoBPaH apart from the other thousands of NYC indie pop bands (probably more like millions if you include Brooklyn), this kind of emotion also runs the risk of developing a bad case of one-trick-ponyitis.
So I was pleasantly surprised when, today, after following them on Twitter, the band not only reciprocated my follow but sent me a bonus message containing this free song download (#heckyessocialmedia). With a less fuzzed out, more electro-pop vibe, the Isle of Deserted Rock Stars remix pushes the up-tempo number further into a lighter, dancier direction, keeping things fun and refreshingly contemporary.
