Soda City Funk
There’s a sampling arms race going on among the vaporwave dance music set. Their pastel retroisms and plundered anime graphics are often soundtracked by swipes from semi-forgotten funk and R&B rhythms, quite a few of them actually from Japan.
In clear contrast, Tim Legend‘s “Soda City Funk” draws from a hardly obscure and prolifically sampled disco hit: Cheryl Lynn’s “To Be Real.” Legend’s able edit job yields a lively beat from the original song, adding his own drums for extra thump. A hook and rap verse yanked from a C+C Music Factory song (no, not that one) makes for a curious juxtaposition. Not what you might expect, but it fits surprisingly snug. Listen below.
