White Lies take on Lana Del Rey‘s with their stripped-down cover of her smoldering 2012 hit, “Ride.” The London trio’s metamorphosed take feels far more “indie rock” than the original, sounding quite similar to the Killers’ Hot Fuss (especially during that first minute). Lead singer Harry McVeigh’s baritone here is complimented by a simple bass, keys and xylophone mixture. The finished product comes through as almost some sort of ode, which is funny because at one point I could have sworn I was listening to “On Raglan Road” (but that could just be me and my unnatural love of Celtic music). Anyways, my point is that White Lies provides a powerful performance here; their version of “Ride” is expressive, eloquent and a bit raunchy (I think we can thank McVeigh’s voice for that one).
