The Mother We Share (CHVRCHES Cover)
It seems like the glut of covers set out to shrink or expand the original, either stripping down a grander production or inflating an intimate song to epic proportions. Glasgow synth-pop outfit CHVRCHES’ debut single, “The Mother We Share,” was a skyscraper of towering catharsis, the one true heir to the anthemic throne that M83 claimed with “Midnight City.” Where the original stretched stories high, this cover from Nashville quintet Wild Cub occupies a cozier, quieter space. Lead vocalist Keegan DeWitt warbles out Lauren Mayberry’s moment-of-truth lyrics in an ursine growl, coming off like the poor man’s Justin Vernon. If DeWitt did indeed conceive this cover as a nod to Mother’s Day, his intentions were a little misguided.
