The Yeah Yeah Yeahs video for “Despair” is the first music video ever to be shot on top of the Empire State Building as well as a career-marking laurel for the band. In a press release, Karen O said, “It was my first-ever trip up to the top of the ESB, top of the world…if someone would have sat us down at the Mars Bar years back and told us that we’d be performing our music on the top of the Empire State Building one day, we probably would have thought that’s the stuff that dreams are made of, not us, no way.”
Yeah (yeah yeah), the PR angle’s good on this one, but the video’s even better, as is the song itself. “Despair” has a simplicity and unrelenting build to it that recalls the Fever to Tell era – a repetitive melodic line with the chords shifting steadily underneath – and it’s pretty great to see the band assemble in the pre-dawn blueness and rage in a sea of winds atop the city as the sun starts to rise. Watch it above.
